Replit drops Anthropic as default and switches to OpenAI for its coding agent

Replit made OpenAI its default model provider for its coding agent, replacing Anthropic, though Claude remains available as a selectable option. Small-business builders who assemble AI workflows should treat the model as a swappable parameter and keep at least one fallback provider wired in from day one.

Replit CEO Amjad Masad told TechCrunch Disrupt that the switch came down to cost, performance on internal benchmarks, and partnership strength. Replit was reportedly a top-five Anthropic customer before this, so the move is significant: most users never change the default, which quietly reroutes a huge share of API spend to OpenAI even while Claude stays on the menu.

What it means for your automation stack

If you run agents today for lead qualification, invoice OCR, support triage or document review, abstract the model call behind a router so you can swap providers with one config change. Rankings between Claude, GPT and Gemini flip every few quarters on both price and quality - in a tender analysis pipeline I built, changing the model for long-document summarization was a one-line edit because the API was never hardcoded into the business logic.

Why it matters: Vendor lock-in on a specific LLM is now a real operational risk even for giants like Replit. Design agent workflows so the model is a replaceable component, not the foundation.
