n8n 3.0 beta ships reliability upgrades and breaking changes

n8n 3.0 beta is a maintenance release of the open-source automation platform many small businesses use to connect apps without writing code, and this version is about reliability, stability and security instead of new features. If you run anything in production on n8n 2.x, open Settings > Migration Report on the latest 2.x build before December, because 3.0 ships breaking changes you need to fix before upgrading.

The n8n team announced the beta today, with the stable release due in early December. Legacy nodes are removed (Function, Cron, Interval, Item Lists, the old OpenAI node), the default Code node timeout drops from 5 to 1 minute, in-memory binary data is gone in favor of filesystem or S3, and self-hosted installs now require Docker - npm and npx setups are no longer supported. Chat Hub is off by default, and community packages must be verified.

What this means for a small business running n8n

If your lead capture, invoice OCR or warehouse flow was built on n8n 1.x or early 2.x, the Migration Report will list the affected workflows and auto-fix most of them for review. The real friction is self-hosting: anyone still running n8n via npm on a VPS needs to move to Docker, which is a weekend of ops work rather than a code rewrite. For teams on n8n Cloud the switch is almost invisible - pick the beta channel or wait for December. The sensible path is a staged rollout on a test instance, two weeks of observation, then flip production.

Why it matters: n8n is becoming more boring on purpose, and boring is exactly what you want from a tool that moves customer data and invoices. An hour inside the Migration Report now turns the December upgrade into a non-event.
